The Dürer painting goes by various titles, such as "Selbstbildnis im Peltzmantel" (Self portrait in a Fur Coat). Self Portrait at 28. Etc.
You can see that there are both similarities and differences between the two paintings, hence the "variation" moniker.
For similarities, the pose is the same, the hair is long and let down, both subjects sport a beard, both are formal portraits, both have inscriptions in Latin, both have a logo on the left made of the initials of the perpetrator. Both paintings are almost identical in size.
There are also many differences. For example, his is a low-key painting while mine is high key. His is of a young man, while mine is of an older man. Dark hair, white hair. His hair is curly, mine wavy. The light comes from the opposite side (totally accidental; I didn't realize this until I viewed them side by side). His is on a wooden panel, mine on canvas. His is done in oil, mine in the more modern acrylic. His hand is long and slender and mine is short and stubby. He has lots of hair on his head and little on his face, while ...... well, you get the picture...... we don't have to let this get ugly.
It is not possible to read the inscriptions in the photos, however, I did quite a bit of research in order to mimic the Dürer inscription in my own. His inscription (as best I could read it) goes something like this:
Albertus Durerus Noricus
ipsum me proprys sigillum
qebam coloribus aetaus
anno XXVIII
Loosely translated:
"Albrecht Dürer signs this painting at the age of 28"
Taking into account archaic Latin and some misspellings, I came up with the following for my own work:
Brian Scott Kimerer
ipsum me proprius sigillum
quidam coloribus aetas
anno LIII
Loosely translated, this is:
"Brian Scott Kimerer signs this painting at the age of 53".
The date of the Dürer painting (in the upper left)
is 1500. The date on my painting (also in the
upper left) is 2000. Two significant dates in
our calendar. Different, but similar.
